Converted Dairy Barn

The Sandy Creek Farm compound was created as a retreat for a large, extended family. The informal program and rural southeast Georgia site, portions of which remain working agricultural land, combined to inform the design incorporating an authentic barn structure. The timber framer was given basic size parameters and charged with finding an existing barn to re-purpose. The western Pennsylvania dairy barn was disassembled, repaired and prepped, then re-assembled at Sandy Creek. Two-thirds of the upper loft floor framing was removed. Those timbers were re-used to frame new dormers in loft bedroom spaces, and for a new cupola illuminates the vast main volume.

To maintain the barn character, while providing insulated exterior walls, the newly erected timber frame was sheathed with salvaged barn siding exposed to the interior, a layer of structural insulated panels, and second outer layer of salvaged barn siding. The result replicates the look of the original barn with wood siding exposed on both interior and exterior surfaces.

The kitchen, mudroom and first floor bathrooms are contained in a one-story shed addition of field stone to differentiate it from the main barn. A massive fieldstone double fireplace anchors the interior as well as the added rear porch that overlooks the man-made lake.
